Reconciliation With My Bestfriend

"If all my friends had forgotten half their promises they're not unkind, just hard to find. One look at you and I know that I could learn to live without the rest, I've found the best...When there's no gettin' over that rainbow, when my smallest of dreams won't come true, I can take all the madness the world has to give but I won't last a day without you...."

--- Dedicated to JC: son of a carpenter; an outcast in His own hometown; the only certainty in my life.

I posted this on my Facebook wall last September, at a time when I felt very low. It is based on a song, "Wont Last A Day Without You", by the Carpenters. This song has been my battlecry whenever my spirit is dragging me down...to remind me that the world can turn its back on me - colleagues, friends, loved ones, even family - and I would be able to take it, but I won't last a day without Him ....

All throughout my struggle during the remaining days of my stay in Libya, this song had kept me company and gave me the courage to go on. Then I came back to the Philippines and the reality of the material poverty in my country engulfed me and for awhile it detached me from the church (which used to be my emotional anchor), from my rosary (which sustained me in my plight in Libya), and from the Holy Bible (which used to be a source of inspiration in the past). I had a heavy heart but I had to put up a happy front because I don't want it to affect my family and the people I come in contact with.... And then at one low moment, I started singing the song, my song for JC, and by the time I was finished I had already resolved to see our parish priest and have the Sacrament of Reconciliation. For Catholics like me, it is a significant move because you humble yourself into admitting your humanity and accepting your frailties as a human being, and at the same time firmly resolve to amend your ways.

On October 26, Wednesday, I had an appointment with Fr. Norman. After more than an hour with him, I came out of the L'Annunziata Church with a definitely lightened heart and a sincere smile on my lips. I have reconciled with my best friend and was happy that with His grace, I was able to make the first step. Once again, I can take all the madness the world has to give ... because I've found the best.
